I live in New York, and my boyfriend lives in Jamaica! I was wondering if it is possible to save alot of money here, and live in jamaica ,even if for only like 3-6 months of the year! I know that the economy is somewhat sluggish in Jamaica.Jobs seem very difficult to come by!I was also wondering if I should go to school for hotel management in hopes of gaining employment in that particular field.Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. I looked into same thing.  The government really doesn't want us taking jobs away from locals.  We also can only stay up to 6 months at a time needing a pass to do so.  The cost of living is much cheaper than the states.  I can't wait until I retire and I'll be in Negril on the Cliffs soaking up the sun and doing 'nothing'. (that's what I'm best at)

  2. You could probably get a job in one of the resorts. If you want to live there enough, you should go for a degree in management. That would be your best opportunity.

  3. Heres the main issue : Could you find legit work ( with a workers permit ), it won't pay what your accusumed to getting in NY. The comment you need JA$1,000,000 is a lie...thats about US$17,000. To live there 3-6 months, you won't need THAT kind od cash. Average apt. there is about US$300-$500 per month. Food is expensive, so double your current budget for that. Getting around is cheap in route taxis, but you might consider buying a used car for a few thousand...they keep their value, so reselling it will be easy. The things you'll be paying beyond rent & food is power/water & phone cards....and of course, recreation money. If you take $1000 for every month your there, you'll be ok....as long as YOU HOLD ON TO IT. Everyone, it seems, has a "whoa is me" story to shell out to you, don't give in !

  4. Living in Jamaica is not as glamorous as it may seem due to lack of jobs. If you can save enough money, make sure its enough to last for food, rent, entertainment and so on because it will be hard to find employment in jamaica!

  5. My boyfriend also lives in Jamaica. As long as you have over a million JA Dollars in Jamaica your good. Your still gonna have to work though if you don't have money like that. As long as you have an education in the field of job you want to work in Jamaica your good cause education will get you far. It will help you find a very nice job in Jamaica. I'm a model but want to try out being a flight attendant. It's seems really cool. I travel alot and I've never seen anywhere else like Jamaica. It's a beautiful place to live. You just gotta have the money. Traveling back and forth is fine though. That's a good start until you get really comfortable in Jamaica.
