Question:

Is it possible to save music directly onto my external hard drive?

I recently purchased an external hard drive for my music because I ran out of room on my computer, so now I am wondering if it's possible to save a download directly into my external hard drive.

And if so, would I then be able to move the downloaded files into itunes?

Thank You

  1. You would have to set your internet program to download to your ext hard drive  through the tools menu

    And to put music into Itunes you may have to convert them to Itunes format

  2. iTunes prefs -> Advanced.

    Set the iTunes music folder location to the external.

    Now go to iTunes menu Advanced -> Consolidate library.

    This will copy everything to the external and anything you add to iTunes will go to the external.

    Now delete /My Documents/My Music/iTunes/iTunes music folder.

    Delete only the iTunes music folder inside the iTunes folder.

    This will free up all the space used N.Y. The music on the internal drive.

  3. Yes. It is very possible. When you save the download it will ask you where to save it. Just navigate to your external hard drive and save it there.

    When you want to put the tunes into iTunes just drag and drop them into an open iTunes playlist. iTunes will not copy the file to your internal hard drive, it will just put a pointer to it being on the external drive. Just remember though, if you disconnect the external drive iTunes will not have access to the music files you stored there.
