Question:

Is it possible to s***w into aluminium window frames

I need to fit rigid fly-screens to my windows. Trouble is, the windows are deeply recessed and there's no possibility of fixing the screens to the adjacent walls. Can I s***w the hinges for the screens directly into the aluminium frames? I'm concerned because the window stays rest inside the frame when the window is closed and there's a rubber gasket all around the window when the screws would go through.

If I can't use screws, how should I fix the screens? (They need to be removable.)

  1. use self tapping screws, dome head, smallest you can get away with

  2. Use double stick foam tape.  This will seal tightly, and will be able to be removed.  There will be residue left behind, but you can remove it with lacquer thinner or acetone.  Hope this helps.

  3. use the smallest self tapping screws possible.  Mark and very slightley use s***w punch before drilling.

  4. yes, go to some place like ACE hardware and get a coarse sheet metal s***w. There are hundreds of different sizes

  5. There is also that temporary caulk. sort of like silly putty. it comes in a roll like that gum in a roll. Its stays soft a long while and has tack.

  6. You can do it with small stubby sheet metal screws. Just know that the window will not close all the way with the screws installed. So, that's your dilemma: is it okay for the windows to not close all the way the entire time the screens are installed?

One option might be to epoxy the hinges in place on the window frame and unscrew them from the screen itself when you don't want them installed. But, the hinges would be there permanently (at least until you pried them off).

  7. yes,but use self tapping screws, drill a small hole first.
