No.  Smoking is not allowed on any train system.  There are signs up in all the cars saying smoking is not allowed.  Also, signs saying not to throw anything out the window.  You can smoke on the platforms, but in between stops you have to be quick.

Nope - smoking is banned on trains in Italy since 2005. I'd suggest hopping off when the train pulls in to a station and have a smoke on the platform. You'll have time in most instances and smoking isn't banned on the platform.
