The definition of a paragraph says it is a writing tool but if you can speak in words and sentences, why not paragraphs?

  1. Pausing a little at the end of a sentence, such as when making a speech, is the spoken equivalent of a paragraph break.

Whoops! That apparently is a period! A longer pause than that, then, perhaps before beginning a new sub topic.

  2. Because it is a WRITING tool. Paragraphs are only used in writing.

You can't speak in essays either, since they can only be written.

Edit: I disagree with the second answer. Pausing a little at the end of a sentence, such as when making a speech, is actually the spoken equivalent of a period.
