Question:

Is it possible to split into a ring domestic ring circuit?

I want to add more sockets into my kitchen but the only socket I can use already has a spur coming off it. However, due to extensive ripping out of plaster board, I have exposed the two cables that feed the main socket. What I need to know is, can I cut these two wires and extend them to include more sockets so in effect, extending the whole ring circuit and not "spuring" off excisting?

  1. Very dicey unless you're d**n sure you know which cable is which.

Be very sure there's enough slack to pull into a

box & splice or you're looking at a reiring job.

  2. Just a note If you are UK based, you are are governed by IEE regulations 16th edition. Basically any work in kitchens and bathrooms should be done by a qualified electrician.

If you do it yourself you will have to get it signed off by a competant person. If you don't do this you may have trouble selling the property.

  3. YES

just make sure that your joints are secure and won,t come loose and no bare wires can cross touch.

the link on the existing main won,t overload the circuit.

LIKE THE PREVIOUS ANSWER, PULL THE FUSE BEFORE ANY WORK, YES ,ITS OBVIOUS BUT WE STILL FORGET UNTIL IT GOES BANG AND WE FLY ACROSS THE ROOM

  4. just for the dummies who answered as of the FIRST of July the seventeenth edition came into effect....a whole different kettle o fish!!! BEWARE

  5. Yes.

MAKE d**n SURE THE ELECTRICTY IS OFF AT THE BREAKER BOX, PULL THE BREAKER FOR THAT CIRCUIT.

  6. Yes if you use 32amp connecters. Or you can spur off it once only.

  7. Please get an electrician to do the work. Safer, for you and your family, and you`ll have the paperwork if you sell the property.

  8. ...You can do this if you are aware of all of the issues and understand how a ring works.  As mentioned, you will need to have enough cable to reach the new socket. You can then use new cable to the next additional socket. But you will need to join back up to the other 'cut' half of the cable. The join is best made inside a socket enclosure. I recommend putting two double or single sockets next to each other over the cut cable. A cable from socket one would go onto the other sockets that you want to install and then back to socket two next to socket one, and then connect back up with the cut cable in the socket. You can't join cables in a junction box if it is subsequently hidden and unavailable for periodic inspection. There are also limits on the length of the circuit but you should be OK with a few meters. Finally, This is notifiable work as it is in a special location and you should really tell the relevant authority and get it certified. Always make sure the circuit is dead before working.

..one more thing...make sure it is an actual 'ring' circuit.  One of the cables into the existing socket may be another spur. Kitchen circuits are often radials.
