5 days ago I dropped a 40lb iron sewing machine (its an old one) on my foot I went to the ER because I was sure it was broke, well come to find out it wasn't broke and the Dr didn't say much about it except that it looked painful the Dr gave me a prescription and sent me home. well 5 days later and my entire foot is now bruised ( it started bruising yesterday) and still swollen at times I get shooting pains up to my mid calf. it doesn't hurt to much to walk on it but it is very uncomfortable to walk on it. I'm just wondering if it is possible to sprain a foot I see so much about a sprained ankle.

  1. You can sprain a foot. There are ligaments and muscles all through your foot. But not like the way you hurt yourself. If you drop that much weight on your foot, of course it is going to be bruised and sore. Just take your meds, ice it down for the swelling. It will take a long time to heal, so sit back and watch a few good movies, Keeping it elevated will help reduce the swelling also.

  2. I would go back to the hospital and get a second doctors opinion doctors shouldn't just give patients meds and send them on there way, you should wrap it up, DON'T walk on it that could make it worse you should DEFINITELY go back!

  3. the foot isnt actually a joint that can be sprained

the ankle is a joint and can get sprained

so no not that i know of

the foot can get injuries not sprains

the sharp pains might of been the muscles in your foot

  4. I'm a physical therapist and yes, it is possible to sprain your foot only.  A sprain is distressed, or injured, ligaments.  You have lots of ligaments in the foot.  However, ER physicians can miss things.  They have been known to miss fractures on X-rays.  My advice - if it doesn't start getting better within the next 3 days, you need to consult an orthopedic doctor.  They can spot a fracture on an X-ray immediately.  My main concern is the shooting pain you mentioned up to your calf.  It could be fractured.  Keep it elevated, keep ice on it (no longer than 15 minutes at a time) and stay off of it.
