Just want to play around a little bit, as a hobby or to practice. Where do I go, how do I get started? A couple few shares here and there. Not investing in funds but specific stocks.

  1. Why don't you paper trade first and accumulate enough capital for trading.

With $100, commissions will eat up most of your profits.  Your stock have to go up more for you to break even.  If commission is $10, you could only buy $90 worth of stocks.  For 100 shares a lot, that means you could only buy stocks which are $0.90 a share and you will only start to profit when it reach $1 which is more than 10% of $0.90.

It is always safer to accumulate the amount of money which can enable you to split your capital into at least 10 portions so that losing streak does not kick you out of the market.
