The car couldn't stop in a short distance even though I press the brake pedal(my car has ABS)?

What's the best way to stop the car when the car in front has a emergancy brake?

  1. 120k is average highway speed. It should be easy to stop the car. Perhaps you have brake problems, or perhaps you're expecting it to stop in an unreasonably short distance.

Emergency brakes only work on one axle, so they stop a car much more slowly than regular brakes.

  2. Your best friend on the highway is distance from the guy in front of you - the more the merrier...At 65 mph or 120 kph, you should be pretty far behind...How far is that you ask?..Hold your arm out in front of you and put your thumb and forefinger close together - about 1/4 inch apart...Look at the space between those 2 fingers...That's how big the vehicle in front of you should look...It takes some doing to keep that spacing because somebody is always cutting in front of you going 5 mph slower or they're in cruise control.

With this kind of spacing you are in excellent position to slow down gradually or change lanes, if traffic permits.

    All the best.

  3. The faster you go, the further you have to stay away from the car ahead of you. If your brakes are perfect--you will stop if you see the problem immediately--if not--the car has moved a lot of distance before you actually hit the brake. The car in back is always at fault--that driver has all the responsibility to stay far enough away. A sliding skid is loss of control---so you will risk collisions head on or off the road. Until you learn the fine points of safe distances--don;t drive so fast. And keep your car well maintained.

  4. Isn't 120KM like 65-70 MPH? A car should be able to easily stop from those speeds(within 120 feet or so). If so I would get another car or get some new brakes if you are having problems stopping. That can end up costing your life.

Also no one uses their emergency brake in a panic stop unless their regular brakes have gone out. The best way to panic stop if you don't have ABS is to feather the brake not try to jam it through the floorboard. That keeps the brakes from locking up.

  5. the best way would be 7 car lengths behind and then you would be able to stop without hitting the other car, dont follow so closely.
