I'm 17 yrs old and currently doing year12, my final year of high school. I'm thinking of going to uni at somewhere interstate other than Victoria. Or maybe take a year off to travel. Is there any advice anyone can give me to this plan? Considering the fact that everything needs money and I don't have a job so money is abit scarce. Websites are helpful as well. Thanks heaps guys!

  1. I think you'd be silly not to take a year off and travel. I'm in my gap year at the moment (I'm in Qld) and have so many friends in uni who wish that they'd taken the year off to travel and work. The thing is, once you start uni, you won't be able to travel until the end (because you earn next to nothing!) and once you're out of uni, you're straight into the workforce. Your gap year is the one chance you get, really.

I would recommend getting a good job, probably casual as they earn a higher rate but don't get the annual/sick leave. Get a few jobs for variety. Then commit to putting a certain amount of money a week into a savings account that you can't access. Then by the end of the year you can have a big holiday with all your savings!

As far as studying interstate goes, you'll find that living in a sharehouse might not be too expensive. Especially if you can get the living away from home to study centrelink payment! Hope that helps a little, good luck!
