I know it is, but how; what's necessary for long term and how you would treat things like hypothermia and frost bite there?

  1. A lot of money.  You have to have a specially designed  house, and get all your food, fuel, and other supplies flown in from thousands of miles away, and you have to pay somebody a lot of money to do that.  It is dangerous to even fly over Antarctica, and supplies can only be landed in summer.  You have to plan carefully to make sure you get enough of everything during the summer, because if you run out of something in winter you are just plain screwed.

If you get frostbite or have some other medical problem, you are going to have to treat yourself because the nearest doctor is also thousands of miles away.  You have to have a supply of drugs and medical equipment on hand and know how to use it, or have a medical team with you.  If you get cancer or have a heart attack, or even get appendicitis, and have to go the hospital, you are screwed again.

The only people who live there are researchers who live in settlements supported by the U.S. Government and other governments.  Governments are basically the only entities with the resources to do this.  It is a really hard place to live.  Winters are unbelievably cold and it is dark for six months.  Nobody really lives there long term.  The people who live there only stay for a year or two and then take time off to go back to civilization and get warmed up for a while.
