hey guys, I'm new to cycling an just recently purchased a stock 2006 Trek 1200 SL (56cm)...turns out it's a tad bit too tall for me, so my friend ended up giving me a 2006 Fuji Roubaix Pro frame/fork for free (54cm) which would be perfect for me. I was just wondering if it's possible to strip all the parts from the Trek then transfer those parts onto the new Fuji frame? and if so how much do you think a typical LBS would charge to do this? thanks guys!

  1. No problem at all, other than possibly a headset compatibility problem, but the Fuji probably has an installed headset.  When you're going from a smaller to a larger frame you typically need new cables and housings, but this shouldn't be a problem in your swap down to a 54.

It's been a long time since I've owned a shop so can't give you a quote on what the build charge would be now.  I strongly recommend that you do this yourself.  All of we riders should know basic mechanics.  One local Atlanta club requires new members demonstrate the ability to tear down and reassemble a bike as a condition to full membership!

If I were you I'd spend the money on the tools and learn how to do this myself.  Don't scrimp on tools.  Always buy the best you can afford.  Good tools will last you a lifetime.

Link to Sheldon Brown's do-it-yourself articles below, an excellent place to start.

  2. IT SOUNDS DO ABLE BUT WITH TODAYS BIKES YOU CAN NEVER KNOW BUT THEN AGAIN MY MONGOOSE HAS ALMOST MORE SPECALIZED PARTS ON IT THAN MONGOOSE SO I WOULD GO AHED AND TRY AND IF YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH WITH YOUR HANDS YOU CAN FIX IT IF IT DOESNT WORK!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Other than possibly a headset, cables, and steerer tube adjustment you should be good to go. My shop would consider this a build, so it would be $70.00 plus any parts.
