I am going to Sao Paulo, Brazil to join my wife, who now lives there, in late April early May 2008. Or I can leave earlier if needed.Am wondering if it is possible to gat a job on a ship in exchange for price of trip, and also room and board during travel. I am going and not returning for long period of time, hopefully.

How would I get info on this sort of thing? Thanks in advance for you time in this matter.

  1. Lots of ships come to Brazil now 'january' because is vacation period, but I think in april will be more dificult.

Here you can see all the ships that came to Brazil and maybe you can contact then and see if it is possible.

  2. you should check with the ship company.

Ships arrives in São Paulo coming from all around the world and are, in majority, international companies (impot/exporting goods). So you should look for the job where you are.

*this kind of job usually pays when you return to the place you've departured from. Staying in São Paulo would be quiting the job ... This is, in a way, what you're looking for!

    Good luck!

  3. I don't think you can easily find that kind of thing Robert. First of all you need to have proper documentation to work onboard. A license, seaman book, certificates, health check etc..

And even if all your certifications are in order, ship management companies won't accept such a thing,i can say. Because, they need to replace someone when you leave to do that job. And it will cost too much.

Also looking from security and safety  side, they would not be wishing to place a crew for only one voyage.Because there's a familiarization period and most probably you will not be efficient.

So, sorry to say that but you should better look for other possibilities.
