  1. There's a train from Naples to Sulmona at 5:51 am (arrive at 10:14 am).  Change to the train leaving Sulmona at 10:46 to L'Aquila (arrive at 11:42 am). Total travel time is 5 hr 51 min and the cost is 14.90 euro.

There is a faster route, but it's more complicated. Take the 7:48 am high speed train from Naples to Rome. From Rome, catch the 9:38 am train to Terni. In Terni, take the 10:36 train to L'Aquila. A 2nd class ticket costs 54.50 euro and the total travel time is 4:51. However, this has a fairly high risk since there is only 5 minutes between trains in Terni. This route is also possible starting at 3:48 pm and arriving in L'Aquila at 8:45 pm with a 14 minute connection time in Terni (more reasonable).

There are several other options. You can check all the schedules and prices at: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

  2. You can take the train, but this route makes more sense by coach, because it goes over the mountains.  If you leave at 2.30pm, you arrive at 18.45 - so 4hr15m in total.

The ARPA coaches run quite an efficient service and you can check the timetable here:
