Is it possible to tile above/around a fiberglass shower insert?

Do people do this or would it look weird?

No, it would not work in the long term. Fiberglass is too flexible, and tile/grout is brittle. Every time you step in the bath, press against the wall, or even fill the tub, the force will cause the fiberglass to bend. Since the tile does not bend, it will separate from the insert or the tiles and grout will crack.

Tile must be laid on a stable and non-flexible surface.

  Like imatiler I ve also done many units and put tile over then to protect the drywall fromm normal splashing.. Caulk is recommended because the grout will crack and it should be seal right there on the edge..You can go a plain tile to match the unit or add just a splash of a color if you wish in decos or a liner bar. Just try yo get a 4x4 or a 6x6 tile that best fits the space between the unit and ceiling.. Sometimes a 4x4 you ll have a small cut at the top and for looks you try not to have a small piece..Thats where sometimes a liner bar will help since they come from 1/2 inch to 2/3 inches wide   GL

Yes it is easy and practical. Firstly against the edges of the fiberglass or acrylic use a Silicon. Use one that is mould or fungi resistant. I have installed heaps of these units then tiled around the rest of the room and floor. The results are good. You don't notice too much with the difference of tiles and shower unit because the shower screen breaks the flow between the two. I always try to use at least a shower floor tray to make the best waterproofing system available. Those trays and shower units will NEVER leak.

You've made a good choice. Just try to use tiles that aren't too different in color to the shower unit.
