  1. yes that is one way

  2. You can do that, but you have to use a crossover cable.  It's wired differently than a regular ethernet cable.  You should get one... they're very handy.  See product link below.

  3. Use a cross over cable to connect the 2 machines.  You will then need to manually (Static) setup the IP addresses on the machines and make sure they are both in the same workgroup.

For this purpose, you can use pretty much any IP addresses you want as long as they are in the same subnet.  The easiest to use for example would be:

    Laptop: 192.168.1.2

    Desktop: 192.168.1.3

    Subnet mask for both: 255.255.255.0

You won't need a Default Gateway for either, nor a DNS server address.

You set these up through the network connections (LAN Connection)

    Right Click Local area connection

    Properties

    Scroll to TCP/IP

    Properties

Then manually set the information above.

To make sure both devices are in the same workgroup:

    Right click My Computer

    Properties

    Computer Name tab

    Change

Select Workgroup and give the same name to both.

If you have to change one of them if they are not the same right now, you will need to reboot for the change to take affect.

    G'luck
