Is it possible to travel between the North and south termanals at Gatwick after going through customs?

I am flying from the south terminal and want to buy something from a shop in the North terminal (air side). Can I go through customs at the south terminal and still get the inter terminal transit to the North terminal and back for my departure from the South terminal?

Not unless you have the boarding pass that would allow you to get through immirgation and security control.

Not once you've passed through customs as you won't then be 'air side' will you?

No once your Airside in the South terminal you will not be able to leave.
