Is there any rail journey in the UK that requires a sleeping berth? Or have they been removed from trains?

  1. No you would need to change trains.  It sounds like an amazing journey though, can i tag along?! LOL

  2. No, you'd need to change twice.  The nearest station to Lands End is Penzance and the easiest for John O'Groats is Thurso.  (There's a nearer station, but no taxis)

Go to http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ for details and times.

  3. Unfortantly there is not station at Lands End or John o'Groates. so its a no

  4. Not direct. The Nearest Station to Lands End is Penzance. From there is a daily service to Dundee (the longest direct rail journey in the UK)

    Start from PENZANCE Station

Take the Virgin train going to DUNDEE Station Depart 07:30

Finish at DUNDEE Station Arrive 20:23

This isn't a sleeper service - dispite the length of the journey.

This route operates in one direction only, the return operates from Dundee to Plymouth with an onward connection to Penzance

The sleeper services are the Night Riviera from London to Penzance (where the terrain doesn't allow high speeds, so the sleeper operates to allow a before 9am arrival)

The Caledonian sleepers operate between london and the highlands of Scotland and are more aimed at tourism then businessmen

  5. The nearest stations to Lands End and John O'Groats are Penzance and Thurso respectively. The journey with the least number of changes (Monday to Friday, current timetable) would be:

    Penzance (d 0730)

    Edinburgh (a 1856)

    Edinburgh (d 1940)

    Inverness (a 2313)

    Inverness (d 0714 next day)

    Thurso (a 1102)

A total journey time of 27h32min with two changes.

The deal would be similar in reverse.

With regards sleeper services, the current options are:

    London Paddington to Plymouth and Penzance (and vice versa);

London Euston to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh (and vice versa) and

London Euston to Inverness, Aberdeen and Fort William (and vice versa).

You can also travel in normal seats on these trains, but it gets very uncomfortable! Been there, done that!

  6. First question; No you would have to change trains at least twice depending on which route you decide to take. Inverness would probably be the last place you would have change trains.

Second question; Yes there are still sleeping berths on some long distance routes, although you don't have to have one you can opt out for an ordinary seat.

  7. As there are no stations or lines at either Land's End or John O'Groats, it would be difficult!
