Is it possible to travel cheap by boat from england to north america, (hitch a ride on a cargo ship)?

Yes I think you can, best bet is to contact some cargo shipping companies and ask really.

yes you still can actually, cargo, container and buk carriers , but it's not a cheap option, flying is much cheaper and a whole lot quicker.

No. Those days are long gone.  There are a few cargo ships with limited passenger accomodation but it is far from cheap and you are not likely to be lucky enough to find one going from the port you want to leave from to the port you want to arrive at - unless it has called at half a dozen places on route, which could mean a voyage of a number of weeks.

No Ships Master would be allowed to let someone 'hitch a ride' these days!
