Question:

Is it possible to turn a regular flute into an alto by just replacing the head joint?

  1. Hello there,

    This will be pretty short :))

    It is not possible to turn a concert flute into an alto flute by replacing the head.   The alto is much longer and larger around.... also the mechanism is slightly different because of the length of the instrument.    Also,  the alto flute is in the key of G while the concert flute is in the key of C.

  2. No, the space between holes has to be proportional to the overall length.  If you lengthen the flute and play using the same holes, the notes will all sound closer together, like 20 notes to the octave instead of 12.

    Find somebody who's got the old Fisher-Price Crazy Combo Horn Set, and you can try it out!  Oh, man, now I have to go put Meltable Snaps It on my Amazon wish list.
