Is it possible to turn my subscription-less Tivo into a regular DVR w/o service and I could do manual records?

I had Tivo for 4 years so I spent over $600 on subscription service, but now I got rid of my cable and only have five channels. So I cancelled my Tivo. Do you know if it is possible to turn my Tivo into a manual recording DVR? If not, I'll just use my PC. Thanks in advance!

It depends on your box's model, software revision, and subscription status.

Under Settings, go to the System Information screen. If your software number is 2.5 or above, the unit will not record manually 30 days after you cancel your subscription.

If you have an old Series1 with 1.3 software, you can use it as a manual, VCR-like recorder.

Hi iuman1979,

The original series 1 TiVo can be used like a VCR as can the very early series 2. The series 3 can not be used nor can the HD model.
