    But she said once you buy the system, you can record whatever you want without any more fees.

    No, a TiVo will not record unless you pay a monthly fee. The very first models would record by time & channel but the current models will not.

    If you want to avoid a monthly fee instead of a TiVo you can get a DVR that requires no subscription. It isn’t as sophisticated as a TiVo but there is no monthly fee.

    You program it like an old VCR entering the start & stop time.

    I think the best one on the market is the Philips DVDR3575H/37. WalMart sells them. As an added bonus you can also record DVDs on the unit.
