Is it possible to use a universal remote with a DVD player that is run through a VCR?

I can't find my DVD player remote so I bought a universal remote. I've been able to program it with my TV and VCR but cannot for the life of me get it to work my DVD player (yes, it is compatible with the remote). I'm wondering if this might be because I run the DVD player through the VCR? Any help would be appreciated!

I assume you can push the buttons on the DVD front panel and everything works fine.  Otherwise you might have wiring problems if you don't have a picture from the DVD player at all showing on the TV.  

Running the output from your DVD player through a VCR should have no affect on your universal remote working the device.  Once you get the right code programmed it should work. There are some cases where universal remotes might not operate certain devices.  I would call the remote control manufacture, maybe they can help.

On a side note, depending on your television and DVD player it's typically not optimal to run your DVD player signal through a VCR.
