Is it possible to use an unlocked iPhone without having a provider?

I know this sounds like a silly question, but I just got an iPod Touch the other day. I realized that if I ever get a phone, well I'd be carrying around my phone and my touch at the same time.

So I was considering pawning off the touch on craigslist, and then putting my money towards an iPhone. Right now a cell phone data plan really isn't in the cards for me, but I'll be getting a job ...eventually..., so is it possible for me to unlock the phone and use the other features, with the opportunity to upgrade at anytime?

  1. I'll take that Touch off your hands for ya :D

Depending on how much you've used it/what you've done, you should be able to return it to the store (depending on their policy). Then I'd just go for that. Honestly the iPhone is not great...my cousin bought one last month and it is horribly slow and she never gets any reception. If you're looking for that, do something like a Blackberry where you can have the phone but also all your music.
