  1. well my family has a solar pannel and we use the heat from that for our showers. if you did change to solar power wouldnt that depend on the sun and if there's not enough energy on a cloudy day then doesn't that mean that you would have a bit of electricity. i would start with the small things like the shower then progress from there. the good thing about the solar pannel is that now we save alot of money.

  2. Thermal solar can be used to warm water to shower use temperatures.

Electricity from solar photovoltaics depends on where you live. You will need far fewer solar panels if you live in Arizona than if you live in Seattle.

The tricky part is the cost. You need solar panels, a converter, and not so green batteries. The cost of the system runs into the thousands.

I can power my home for many years buying power from the grid for far cheaper than it would be to build a solar power system and maintain the batteries.

  3. yeah, of course

i know a guy that powers all the lights in and around his house with solar panels that are on his roof and in his garden

you can also power your hot water with just one 2x1m solar panel, thats what i do

  4. Of course you can. It's a little expensive to get started but it pays it'self off after 10 years (at the current electric rates) and there are MAJOR tax incentives right now also.

If you can afford to lay out 10-15K dollars then it's a very good investment.

  5. Yes of course. You can also get a government grant to help buy the system, everyone is eligible (UK that is) its £2500 for electricity producing panels and £400 for a hot water thermal system. You can then sell back the power you produce to the electric company. Its not a money making endevour but it is a method of saving. You'll actually see your meter running backwards on a good sunny day. Learn to utlilize this power you are harnessing on a good sunny day and you'll be on top of this huge expense. Its the way of the future but because noone can claim rights to the sun's energy and bang a revenue on it (its up there for everyone to use) its not promoted properly. Check out the the Energy Saving Trust and find more about accredited companies before you think about it. There's a lot of fly by nite companies out there and some really good ones. Ask for a few quotes and get the grant once you contract the work. Its easy if you've got the spare cash to do it. Many haven't and its really not rocket science, I don't know why its soooo underestimated. Probably cos Britain wants to go Nuclear (there's revenue in that)...controllable, they don't want independant little people like us having our own power now do they....
