Like, if you have retinal detachment while you're sleeping.

  1. Its usually not possible, u will have atleast some symptoms before u get blind

  2. Possible but not likely.

Any number of blinding conditions could happen overnight, most likely to happen very quickly like overnight would be central retinal artery occlusion.

  3. I have woken up blind drunk a few times

  4. Retinal detachment can happen suddenly. Some people notice a masssive amount of floaters appearing suddenly and they might see flashing lights in thier vision. Sometimes it's described as a 'curtain' coming in front of the affected eye.

Retinal detachment is very serious and can lead to permanent vision loss the longer it is left untreated. See the ER if you suspect this or any sudden vision loss.

There a some other conditions that can cause similar symptoms, such as strokes and hemmorages.

  5. You can usually tell you are having a retinal detachment if you have sudden blackening of the vision as if a curtain is going over your eyes or you see spider webs in your vision. Flashing of light is usually fast before this happens. Not the big amounts of time you have had. Vitreous detachment is usually followed by some flashing and floaters. You are probably okay but I would advise a trip to the eye doctor tomorrow first thing. If you start seeing curtaining of your vision I would seek ER attention tonight. Good luck

  6. There would generally be some kind of trauma associated with retinal detachment.  You could easily wake up blind by an allergic reaction or some such thing.  I woke up barely able to open my eyes but unable to see anything clearly one Christmas morning.  The ER doc said it was an allergic reaction to the fibers in the carpet I fell asleep on the previous night.  He gave me some ointment to rub on the eyelids and it was better in about 12 hours.
