I recently tried morel mushrooms and was surprised to see how expensive they are. I know there's many other types of expensive mushrooms. I was wondering if ti would be practical to start a business growing mushrooms to sell to upscale restaurants. I guess my questin is could you make decent money compared to what your expenses would be and the time it would take? Also, I imagine there are certain species of mushrooms that don't grow well indoors, probably why their so expensive. Overall is this a practical idea?

  1. Like any production enterprise, there's come real expense involved. Remember that you have to grow an awful lot of mushrooms to clear any money, and you have to be able to be a reliable source of constant supply. Which means, you have to beat the deals from the other suppliers or offer something they don't or some other value that makes buying from you worthwhile. See if you can find a mushroom farm somewhere and go look. It takes a lot of space to produce numbers. And you have to find a good source for horse manure. Consider that there's a reason they're so expensive. Discover why, and see if you can beat that problem.

  2. You'd have to do some market research...

Do restaurants need a place to buy their mushrooms from? What could you offer that others couldn't?

As for the expenses you would incur--well I have no idea, that's more research you have to do  :)
