Is it practical to get to San Marino ( and to get around San Marino) without renting a car?

I'd like to spend at least a couple of days there (and not just do a rushed day trip).

  1. Absolutely, I live near Verona and went to San Marino a couple of weeks ago without using a car.

Take the train to Rimini. When you exit the train station, thee is a tourist office immediately to your left. The rack in front of the station includes maps, brochures, and bus schedules for San Marino and other attractions. Just past this, there's a small building marked "bus tickets". There will be someone at the left window selling tickets for San Marino. Ask for andata e ritorno - tickets to go and return.

The bus stop itself is across the street about 20 meters past the coffee shop on the corner - it's well marked.

Along the way, there's a park with a lot of old airplanes parked on a hill - a good photo op from the bus. You also get some good views of the castle and towers from below especially if you're on the left of the bus.

There are hotel listings here: http://en.venere.com/hotels_san_marino/

Note: the Italian train website shows a San Marino stop - that is a town on the line between Venice and Trento, not the Republic of San Marino.
