  1. It really depends on the restaurant and the amount of change left. Its more common with the quick service/casual dinning spots like dennys/norms/mimi's to ask if they need change back to promote quicker guest movement. In more formal higher class dinning, they typically would prefer guest to stay longer and provide the bill and remaining change in bill books to be settled at their leisure. So its really up to you...find what category that restaurant falls under and I'm sure you'll be able to determine whats the recommended etiquette.

  2. It's always rude for the server to make that assumption. Some people are very offended and will leave a smaller tip.

Sometimes servers will say that they haven't calculated in advance, and they're just doing it for the convenience of the customer, who might have given it some thought. But that's like saying to the customer, "I don't know how much change you're supposed to be getting back, because I didn't look. (reasonable) But whatever it is, I'll just keep it all, right?" NOT.

  3. Just my opinion, but I think it would be rude. He would deffinatly get a lesser tip if they said that to me!! They are suppose to bring your change and let you worry about their tip. Some of them are really a little over anxious about what they are going to find on your table when they come back to clean it off!

  4. that is totally rude!

  5. I think that is highly rude and I would have been pissed off. They should automatically bring your change no matter what the amount is. They don't know if you plan on giving them a different bill altogether. Its very rude and very UNproper.

  6. No   but its done alot  i think it can be ok  like if the amount on the table  is about right for the totoal plus tip

  7. If you are working in a restaurant where you have to take the check, then always bring back the change, broken down.

Make sure in the change, that there is at least 15 %, broken down.

In other words, if the check is thirty dollars, and they give you forty, you can bet that you are not going to get a ten dollar tip.  15 % of a thirty dollar check is 4.50, so make sure you bring back either two five dollar bills, or a five and five ones.

  8. If your at Denny yeah, but if your at a fine dinning restaurant no. Just bring it.
