Is it "Taiwan, R.O.C." or "Republic of Taiwan, R.O.C."?

How do I explain (in a formal business letter) that the country should be referred to as "Taiwan R.O.C." and not ""Republic of Taiwan, R.O.C."? There is a difference, right?

This document needs to be sent of national approval so it is crucial that I get this right.

  1. In a formal Letter you should write:

    Taiwan - Republic of China

    or

    Taiwan - R.O.C.

  2. the official address should show:

    address

    city, zip code

    Taiwan, ROC

  3. Republic of Taiwan does not exist.

The official moniker is (just plain)  Republic of China.

To avoid confusion, some people use Republic of China on Taiwan.

  4. its Taiwan, R.O.C. there is no republic of Taiwan.

  5. Republic of Taiwan would be R.O.T. and you can't write "R.O.T., R.O. C." 'cos that would be too many R.O.'s

  6. "Taiwan" is also commonly used to refer to the territories governed by the Republic of China (ROC) and to ROC itself, which governs the island of Taiwan, Orchid Island and Green Island in the Pacific off the Taiwan coast, the Pescadores in the Taiwan Strait, and Kinmen and the Matsu Islands off the coast of mainland Fujian. The island groups of Taiwan and Penghu (except the municipalities of Taipei and Kaohsiung) are officially administered as Taiwan Province of the ROC.

But, ... according to the Central Intelligence Agency The World Factbook, it is "Taiwan."  The dominant political issues continue to be the relationship between Taiwan and China - specifically the question of eventual unification - as well as domestic political and economic reform.

note: debate on Taiwan independence has become acceptable within the mainstream of domestic politics on Taiwan; political liberalization and the increased representation of opposition parties in Taiwan's legislature have opened public debate on the island's national identity; a broad popular consensus has developed that the island currently enjoys sovereign independence and - whatever the ultimate outcome regarding reunification or independence - that Taiwan's people must have the deciding voice; public opinion polls consistently show a substantial majority of Taiwan people supports maintaining Taiwan's status quo for the foreseeable future; advocates of Taiwan independence oppose the stand that the island will eventually unify with mainland China; goals of the Taiwan independence movement include establishing a sovereign nation on Taiwan and entering the UN

  7. The most accurate name would be "Taiwan, subsection of 7-11's giant mall."

Hmm, in general to be brief is a preferable writing style. I am guilty of ignoring that quite often myself.

Stick to Taiwan R.O.C. or even better, Taiwan R.O.c.

    Mr. Ma wont mind.

  8. You should write "Taiwan, ROC", since Taiwan is only a province of the Republic of China, which includes mainland China and Mongolia in its territory(even though it rules only Taiwan).

Republic of Taiwan doesn't exist, so don't use it.

  9. We call our country Taiwan, however on my passport "Republic of China" is officially used.
