It really doesn't matter whether it's a good idea or not - they really have no choice if they are to try and maintain any semblance of unity in the party.

When they shunned Lieberman, he ran as an independent and trounced their candidate. They don't want to repeat that mistake more than once.

Yes but it has to be done to even partially appease her sour grapes supporters. I think it is going to be a wash - will help him to about the same extent it hurts him but if he didn't it would be worse.
