  1. it might not seem like it, but the military is one of things to get involved in. It teaches you how to be a better person, how to take pride in your country, the benefits are absolutely amazing but if it not for you dont join for your own safety

  2. I did it to serve my country, it's corny, but that's the reason. (Air Force '87 - '94) And , yes, it's a good thing. Those twits that are telling you you'll make more money at McDonalds are just plain wrong. My nephew is in the Corps, single enlisted, has two motorcycles, a new pickup, an HDTV, a home computer AND a lap top, and money to spend on the girlies. He's having the time of his life. He also did a tour in Iraq.  Like anything else, it's what you make of it.

  3. Well I haven't ACTUALLY joined yet.  But I am going to because the job satisfaction is through the roof.  With most jobs in the military, what you get to experience day to day is unmatched in anything in the civilian world.  That, and I am proud to serve my country.

  4. I joined because I am willing to die at ANY SECOND for my country if called of me. I joined because I tear up everytime I see the towers falling in my mind. I joined because my eyes tear up with hatred when I think of the cowards that attacked our country and thought they could get away with it.

Joining is NOT about the money, its NOT about making yourself feel good or looking good. Joining the military is about serving your country and not thinking twice about it. And if you join the Army or Marines you WILL get sent overseas. So if your not ready to go, dont sign up.

Best thing I ever did. Goin on my first deployment next month.

    HOOAH!!!

  5. Does McDonalds offer free medical/dental/optical care?  How about 30 days paid vacation per year plus all federal holidays (when not deployed, of course)?  How about job satisfaction?  Would you rather do something that really matters or just serve food to total strangers?  There is more to military service than the money.  NOBODY joins the military to get rich.  It IS a steady paycheck, but you'll never be rich from your military pay.

I joined the day the first Gulf War kicked off and I've attended every conflict since 1991 (I'm an aircraft mechanic so no combat, but I was there).  When I enlisted, I had been married for 6 months and was 21 years old.  I worked as a cashier at a convenience store, so the military was a step up for me as far as money is concerned.  Also, there was a war going on and I saw it as my duty to serve.  I realized I loved it, so I stayed in.  I will retire in just under 3 years.

  6. I joined because I needed a job. You won't make much money your first couple of years but  after you move up in rank the pay and benefits are excellent. I've been in 11 years and  I actually make more money and have better benefits than my peers with college degrees.

  7. Yes.

Show me anyone flipping burgers who made $65k last year.

Show me anyone at McD's whose take home pay is tax free.

    20 year retirement?

    Ha!

  8. no

  9. It is the noblest thing a person can do.

A person in the military is performing the greatest expression of citizenship and service a person can. More than voting, more than paying taxes, more than feeding the homeless, more than supporting the military and more than doing community service! Why you may ask?

A soldier is a citizen who not only participates in the body politic, but he perserves the existence of the body politic, with his very life if need be. A soldier must not always agree with or condone everything his government does, national service trancends politics and ensures the continued existence of our land, people and culture, things that may change, but change by our choosing and not that of another nation's will.

You want Bush out, Bush in, healthcare private, public whatever...we choose it as a nation because we are free. Politics are temporary, but the goal is that America and the Constitution are here for our ancestors, to live as they see fit.

A soldier serves his entire nation, not just his state, community, or individuals. A politician serves his nation as well, but is not asked to make the same sacrifice.

Charity is great, helping others is great, being a public servant in your community is great, all of these are good admirable things, but they are not the greatest expression of citizenship.

You don't do it for the money, you do it because you want to experience full citizenship and serve your nation, a feat many unfortunately do not choose. How can a person be a leader and ask soldiers to go to war never having done it themselves? How can a leader belittle what a soldier does and endures once a war is waged having never risked or endured as the soldier has?

War is ugly and many say that making peace is the best solution to all world problems. They are correct on both accounts and none know this better than the soldier. But the reality is that lambs can't make pacts and deals with wolves. One must always make peace from a position of just strength, if the peace is to be real and lasting. Ensuring that we are prepared and willing to visit horror upon any who menace us is the best assurance we will never be menaced...(a lesson we forgot when we tried to deal from weakness). Oliver Cromwell said "The best ambassador for peace is a man of war".

Many feel they are above the military and look down on it and I say they have no ideals. Many feel what they have done is enough and I say they had more to give. Many feel that giving to the needy (either with their own money or our tax money) and fighting for the civil rights of the minority is the most noble and I say that without the soldier there would be nothing to give to the needy and no rights to fight for.

The soldier is paragon for without the soldier there is nothing.

(Soldier is used as an encompassing term including marine, airman, sailor, guardsman and soldier)

PS: The money is nice if you are young and single!
