Question:

Is it really for me?

I played volleyball 7th and 8th grade. Now that I"m in high school and starting summer conditioning, I'm just really having second thoughts about playing volleyball. I mean, I think I'm pretty good, but I don't have the endurance when it comes to keeping up with the other girls. I like the sport, but all these conditioning sessions and things like that are just awful. I really hate them and if the whole season is going to be like this, then I dont' want to play. I know I sound pathetic....but......what should I do? Do you think I'll get in better shape or I'll still fall behind?

  1. i honestly know how you feel

with me volleyball is a love hate relationship..i hate the conditioning but i love the game

i hate playing volleyball for my school i have to play with some of the meanest people at my school and it ain't fun

but yet I'm still trying out..not to mention we probably run more than most of the other sports...

if you love the game enough and are willing to do all the c**p for it then yea play volleyball....

  2. Well once in high school, the volleyball program becomes very competitive and requires a lot out of a person. If you like playing volleyball then keep playing. If the conditioning is getting to you then on your own time go out and run etc. Don't play it to get in shape, you need to get in shape to play the sport. And more than likely the practices will be like that maybe even worse. This is a very demanding sport and requires a lot. You shouldn't let the other girls scare you, yeah they might be ready for it, but are they just doing it for the attention...??...And you won't fall behind as long as you stay ahead of the game, so go to the conditioning sessions and do work outs on your own, it will pay off...go after it!

  3. I can tell you from experience, it will not be that bad during the season. It's summer conditioning. They make it harder now to try and make it easier later. I think if you push yourself and get through the tough part now, it will work out for you later.

On the other hand, if your heart isn't into playing anymore, then don't. It's no use to play [even if you are good] if you don't want to. You'll just be miserable later.

You are the only one who knows what to do.

  4. it depends do really like it or notand if not don't do it

  5. you should try to get in better shape if you like volleyball than u should play and try to make yourself more fit try running a little more every day over the summer and u will get in better shape

  6. I'm also doing summer conditioning and tons of girls drop out of it. I'm very athletic and athletic looking and by looking at me you wouldn't get I'm one of the last to come in for sprinting but I am. It's just a matter of getting back in shape and used to running so much and how your body is. I'm skinny but not built to run so much so I'm always looking pathetic too. I think you should stick with it though. You've already been playing 2 years and that's an awesome jumpstart, wish I had it. Over summer the conditioning is usually very difficult but it's mainly to get you back i nshape and to see who hasthe most heart. Stick it out, while doing the conditioning just try and think: This little bit of running won't kill me. I obviously lived since the lasttime I was at conditioning so I can keep doing it." It's tough but once the season starts up, that running is history, well, depending on your coach. Volleyball isn't an endurance sport that much, more of an explosive power type thing with some endurance. All the running won't be needed so I'm sure once the season starts your team will be far too busy getting in enough actually vollleyball practice instead of running all the time. Stick it out. You have a great jumpstart and if you get through the hard work you'll have a lot of fun on a highschool team. I didn't play my 9th grade year and I regretted it so much. The worst that can happen if you lose some weight and build some muscles :P A few days of being tired for some muscles and a chance at being on a highschool team sounds good to me. Soccerchic is right, you may not be able to keep up with the older girls right now but that's because they kept at it when they weren't as great and now they're the leaders so just stick it out and you'll be able to hold your own i nno time. :]

  7. Use your lack of ability to strengthen your desire. If they are better than you  try to work hard or harder than your teammates so you can achieve and maybe exceed their level of excellence. You will be fine I promise

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.- Aristotle

    good luck

  8. I think it's up to you if your're physically capaple go for it.It's a really fun sport, and just because you don't like conditioning doesn't mean your a whimp.I mean who likes conditioning in the first place. You don't have to be the best player on the team to play as long as you give it your all.I played volleyball last year and I stunk but I slowly progressed and got better it takes time.If you give it time you will probably be a lot better.

    Best wishes

  9. if it's like that all year u'll be in way better shape, just stick with it and go running too, it helps with endurance. Just give it one year in high school if u don't like it after freshman year then stop but at least try it

  10. i had a friend that was like that in one of my teams and at first she was always falling behind and as the season progressed she pushed through it and was starting to keep up i think that if you love something then you should go for it and the more you condition the more you will improve and also if your afraid of what your peers will say if your behind your trying your hardest and dont let them get in the way of you playing your game. go for it!!!

  11. don't worry you WILL get in better shape as you keep doing it.  it gets easier and easier.  i had to do the same thing.  on my team we only had to do conditioning a few times just to get us in shape and our fitness up.  if you think you have the skills, GO FOR IT!!!!!!! (remember to try to keep a positive attitude throughout your conditioning sessions because it makes it go faster for some reason)

also, i'm sure you're not the only one who feels like they can't keep up with the other girls.  i'm sure there are other people who think they don't have endurance.

hope this helps good luck!!  :)

  12. I think you will definately get in better shape. The coaches shouldn't hold any difficulties you have at first against you, if they thought every player was totally fit already then they wouldn't hold summer conditioning. What they do want to see if that you have the desire and commitment to stick out the bad part to get to the caramel-goodness of actually playing volleyball.

Not sticking it out because I was too lazy is one of my biggest regrets from HS, although in my case it was soccer not volleyball. You know yourself better than I do, but you will probably regret not playing later.

  13. Of course you can't keep up with the older girls, they felt exactly how you are feeling. They kept going and made it. I think you should keep at it. Give it all you got!!!!!!

  14. this exact same thing happened to me. i played all through middle school and was really good. my gym teacher in 8th grade actually wanted to make i did try out for the team bc i was that good. once i got to high school, i went to the school to sign up to be on the team and got intimidated and never signed up. i regret it so much. i ended up playing for my church (pal) and loved every minute of it but i wish i had played in high school. try out! whats the worst that can happen, they say no. the conditioning might be hard but the more you do it the easier it will get. at least you know you tried. good luck girlie!
