Is it really necessary to upgrade to Windows XP3?

Question

Windows tells me that Windows XP3 is ready for installation. Windows also recommends that I back up my computer system. I don't know how to back up! Would it be safe to install without backup? Or is the upgrade unnecessary and so should I ignore it?

do you mean SP3? The Upgrade isn't vital, but if you do decide to install it, it will back-up automatically.

get the backup details off microsoft.com

then add the sp3 update and the daily updates

Well sometime in the future Microsoft will stop issuing updates unless you have service pack 3 installed. I would highly recommend installing it but only after you have backed up the files (your docements, pics, eetc..) on CD. If sservicepack 2 is anything to go by then it could stop your computer working, I was lluckily when I installed service pack 2 as only the start bar on one log-in account stop working but known other computer that stopped working.
