Is it really that bad that I refuse to recommend my brother for a job where I work?

My 15 year old brother is looking for jobs, and he wants to apply at the place that I work. My mom was like begging me to recommend him to my bosses, but I absolutely refuse to because in my opinion my brother is like the scum of the earth and I don't want to be associated with him if he did something bad at work. Just to paint you a picture of him, pretty much his whole wardwrobe is shoplifted clothing, he does drugs, he barely goes to school, he is the most irresponsible person ever, he doesn't come home till like 3 am, and he is just a bad bad person. Is it really that bad that I don't want to recommend him? I mean my mom should understand that this is my JOB and I don't want to recommend someone that I think would be terrible cause that could risk my job.

  1. If your worried about your brother making you look bad and giving you a bad reputation, I wouldn't do it..... besides dont mix work with family unless you HAVE to.... seriously.... he's already your snot nose pesky brother..... now your mother expects you to live under one roof with him AND go to work together AND be at work together AND go home together..... pffffffft is she day dreaming of whats practically not possible!!!! hahahahahahah

If I know siblings, you dont ENCOURAGE mingling outside the home .... because then you'll kill eachother!!! hahah good luck!

  2. No. stick to beliefs!

  3. I totally get where your coming from! my brother is the same way. Even though i am 3 years younger than my brother, i think i have some advice

its not bad to not reccomend him for a job, but im sure he is nothing close to the "scum of the earth" catigory you were speaking of.

I'm sure he has interests like everyone else in the world does, so find out what they are! Lets say he enjoys cooking (doubtful but ok) tell him you dont want him working at a job that he doesnt enjoy and just be a referance for him when he fills out an application to a (ex:) resturaunt as a waitor

Its not wrong to be honest, but try and think of how he feels. A bad rep is hard to get past, he needs a job that will make him WANT to better himself, not force him.

    Anyway, goodluck!

  4. Wow! Stick to your guns, and let your brother get his own job. Does your Mom know about the shop lifting? Tell her!!

  5. That's a hard situation.  Just tell your mom that you talked to your boss and recommended him, even if you didn't.  It will get her off your back and there's really no way for her to tell that you didn't recommend your brother to your boss.  I doubt she will call your boss and ask.

  6. I still think you should recommend him. If that's how you view your brother than that's most likely how he'll be. A job might teach him some responsibility and if he works near you, if you talk to him, he might be more inclined to behave well at work. At his age, it's important he learns good work ethics. If you do recommend him, or if he finds another job, tell him that the people he's working for are paying him to WORK not to slack off or hang around. If he has nothing to do, find something to do.

Like I said, a job might help him. He's young, he's irresponsible. A job might help.

  7. Jann called it.  You got your own job and he should get his own job.  You are correct his poor performance would reflect on you.

  8. Despite your brothers actions and problems, calling him the scum of the earth is absolutely HORRIBLE. Siblings are supposed to stick by eachother. Your anger and rage should be directed at your parents who clearly do no know how to raise children. Why is he allowed to come home at 3am? Your parents could put a stop to that you know. Apparently they also know about the drugs and shoplifting and have not taken strong parental steps to do something about it. Obviously you are concerned about recommending him for a job, but to turn your back on him is wrong since obviously your parents have already closed their eyes to his problems.
