Is it really that important to get the right volume size of box?

I want to get some new subs but i have a reallly really nice box. Is it that important to keep the volume the same or can i just get the new subs i want and put them in there?

the box is more important than the subwoofer, sell your box, take your new subs to a shop and ask them to build a custom box, it is much better than the prefab boxes.

yes, there is a science to it.  if your replacing with the exact same size/watt subs, OK. if not, you need to "calibrate" the box for maximum performance.
