Is it really true that make up brushes are made with animal fur?

I was reading this web site and it said that make up brushes are made with animal fur. I always just assumed they were made with synthetic fibres. Are they really made with animal fur, or is this website just trying to sell me an over priced make up brush $50 seems a bit steep for a brush??? http://www.choosecrueltyfree.org.au/

Depends on the brush.  Anything with hair would have a smell to it.   Most artist paint brushes are from hair.

$50? OMG...

Not really, most make-up brushes are made from synthetic hair, just read the package and if your still iffy about it, just find somthing that your sure about.

most makeup brushes are horsehair which freaking sucks...people can substitute horse tail for cotton or something...

I wasn't going to answer but I have to share something.

I've worked in a cosmetics store, and to answer your question, I'm afraid YES, a lot of commercial make up brushes are animal derived. The good news is you can buy synthetic ones.

You can be 100% certain that The Body Shop's make up brushes are synthetic. I worked there and it was one of the things we had to learn.

They are really made from animal hair. Don't know how they stole the hair from the animals but I could sell them some of my dog fur he is a mass producer!! Just Jokin. Um yah I'm a cosmetologist and some of the people that try to sell you brushes in this business are ridiculous.  So the experts say the best brushes are from squirrel fur. Poor Squirrels. If you're looking for some good brushes anything with synthetic taklon is the best!! And they are easy to clean. Good brand is urban decay& too faced brushes.

Bad news: the best makeup brushes and shave brushes are made with fur. If you're paying 50 bucks, you're probably buying one made of fur. Badger is popular for shave brushes; I don't know what is used for the powder brushes. You can ask at the store. Another factor that can impact the cost is how the brush is cut. Ones that are done by razor, set in nice wooden handles, etc are going to cost more than ones that fall apart and shed bristles from their crappy plastic and aluminum handles if you try to wash them.

I know that Aveda keeps ponies around and uses the hair from their tail for their makeup brushes.  A lot of companies use animal hair--not fur--for makeup brushes.  It doesn't kill the animal to take it, but it's still exploitation.  

Some vegan online retailers will have synthetic makeup brushes.  Otherwise, it pays to ask what the brush is made of.

Unfortunately yes, most are; however, i wouldn't buy that brush, it seems far too overpriced.
