Is it really true that places like Petco and Petsmart get animals from mills?!

I read at least 5 articles on this matter, however I need it to be confirmed, as all of the articles didn't give a specific store name that buys these poor animals.

  1. Very much true. It's mainly only kittens and puppies though. Most Petco stores and Petsmarts breed their own animals around here though... rodents and fish.

  2. ok NO its not true, i used to work at petsmart, i was actaully pet care manager (which meant i was in charge of all the animals) and we used to order them from a breeder... not sure about petco, we didnt breed our pets either, and we dont sell puppies or cats the cats we had were from a shelter not a mill and they were for adoption!

**and if ur gonna believe PETA then u believe in killing poor animals**

  3. Yes, I've worked at both. It upset me so bad I had to quit...which is really saying something considering I see people mangled every day as a medic. Check out some of these sites...(and yes, they are from places OTHER than PETA as well for some of you automatically biased people)

  4. yes it is so true! i cant stand the fact that they breed the females until they die!

    it is so gross!!

i only buy from breeders not from pet stores

  5. It's very likely. How do you think they have a constant supply of birds, reptiles & small animals?

Some business is constantly breeding to provide young animals for the stores to sell.

  6. Video footage obtained in a new PETA undercover investigation reveals horrific nightmare conditions for small animals and birds bred and brokered by a major supplier to PetSmart.

What PetSmart's Own Employees Are SayingIn addition to the ever-present misery caused by extremely crowded cages, filthy conditions, a lack of basic enrichment, an often inadequate food and water supply, and excessive noise, PETA's investigation of a massive breeding mill and one of PetSmart's main animal suppliers, Rainbow World Exotics in Hamilton, Texas, also revealed that live animals were thrown into the trash, were deprived of desperately needed veterinary care, were suffering and dying alone in their cages, and were cannibalizing each other; that rabbits underwent crude neuter surgeries at the hands of a layperson in a filthy, dark room; and more. Unsuspecting PetSmart customers have reported buying unsocialized, sick, and injured animals, including guinea pigs with eye and upper respiratory infections, hamsters with deadly diseases, sick and dying betta fish, and suffering birds. As PETA's investigator documented at this breeding mill, overcrowding, lack of veterinary care, and lack of socialization are the norm, not the exception, for the tens of thousands of animals at Rainbow. PetSmart's trade in live animals supports this mass-breeding industry that is just as cruel as—and even less regulated than—the puppy mill industry. It results in abysmal treatment of tiny, vulnerable beings, and it ultimately leads to their overpopulation, homelessness, neglect, and suffering.

Yes this is true although Im not sure it is this way with every Petsmart out there. But I found this on the internet for you. It is sad but it happens with alot of petstore places.

  7. Some do, some don't, it depends on the owners. At one of the petcos in my town, only offers animals sometime, because they sell shelter animals and locally bred animals. The petco on the other side of town has a constant suply of animals, and buys from mills.

  8. Yes, very very true. Petco, Petsmart, and every pet store that sells animals is disgusting. They get their animals from mills that backbreed their females until death. Please opt for adopting or rescuing any animals, including rodents.

  9. Either a mill or a back yard breeder pumping out the babies (smaller scale mill).  Even if they don't sell dogs and cats from mills that doesn't mean that their small animals don't come from the same situation.

There are many, many, many small mammals like rodents dying in shelters every day.  Buying from a pet store supports the death of these animals.  It also support the unending cruelty of breeding these animal back to back and having them live in horrible conditions.

  10. Yes, it is true.

  11. I work at PetSmart and they defiantly do not do that. That is stupid! Who ever said yes, how are you so sure have you worked at a petsmart before...most likely not!

  12. Most do. Most of the time, the pets that places like Petco and Petsmart get are from 'breeders' and are actually people breeding animals in bad conditions for the money.

Most of the people that sell litters to pet stores are breeders but what makes them mills is the care of the animals. They aren't beloved pets that are bred carefully for the best genes, they're just bred. That is why many of the animals purchased from pet stores will be sick or pregnant.

    Make sense?

  13. Yes, it is true. They can deny it because they use 'distributors' as a middle man. The distributor buys the animals from breeding mills and then sells them in turn to pet stores.

  14. well no duh where else would they get them and if an animal is sick they put them in a freezer

  15. just go here and watch this video. it shows you what is really happening. no animal should have to go through this stuff.
