  1. I don't suppose you can lose with buying a Blu Ray player since it incorporates your DVD library.  I say if you're ready to put the bucks in for upgrading, go for it.  Then buy whatever you don't have on DVD in Blu-Ray format from here on.  I think more care is taken to preserve previous formats, hence DVD is not really obsolete and probably won't be.

I really think Blu-Ray will be the final physical media format, because if you think about it, there is no need to upgrade the technology further.  We have crystal clear images on ideal 52" household screens.  I don't think householdwise that we would need to push the technology any further.  Will TV's get any bigger in homes?  Not really, not in 95% of homes anyway.  It's hard to see the difference in 1080p versus 720p/1080i much less it will be in 1080p versus 4x1080p.  I think we've hit a plateau in home consumer media, and since everything is digital (which DVD and BluRay are), I wouldn't think we'd have to worry about anything becoming obsolete from here on out.

  2. I think about this quite often being a man that likes to buy DVDs:) I guess they become a collectors item in the future.

But also what you suppose to do? not a DVD now because it's gonna be out dated in the future? you'd never have a movie in your house.

So I don't know. Enjoy them while you have them!

  3. Wait until the format war is over, and then choose the winner, which will be around for a few years. For example BluRay has just won over HD-DVD as the format that will go forward, so go with BluRay, which is backwards compatible with the old DVD format anyway, and a BluRay player will give better results than a DVD player for the DVD format.

Provided you have a working player, you can view the format.

  4. Well Dvds are really obsolete.  Blu ray players can play both dvds and blurays and considering the price of blu rays disc, dvds are still a good option.  also the PS3 as a bluray player is nice but it also has one of the best upconverting dvd players in it, so it most all your dvds look even better.
