  1. a fianchetto'd bishop is good when it is used as part of a greater strategy.  This would usually mean the player is attempting to control the center without necessarily occupying it with pawns.  A strategy popularized by the Hypermoderns  80+ years ago.  here is a link that discusses the fianchetto in detail
