I'm learning elementary guitar and don't want to get burnt out by practicing to much but still keep it fun.

Any tips?

  1. I play guitar too and I play for hours everyday for enjoyment but first  I practice scales and exercises for the first  30 mins everyday. and if I'm playing and if I can't get something right I would take the exercize and put it into phrases or parts and loop the same part over and over until I get it right and I do the same with each part and then play it all together. but I would practice everyday for a half hour. its a good habit to get into. Goodluck!

  2. Depends on how good you want to be. Most musicians will tell you the same thing "practice makes perfect!" I recommend at least 30 minutes of practice a day. With this you will make forward progress. If you skip days you just wont have near as much progress in your learning. It can be done, and do whatever suites you. A few minutes every day will also allow you to remember what you learned.

  3. Seems to me, if you want to play the guitar it would be hard to put it down. I learned to play many years ago by ear and haven't quit, and when I do play or practice it's hard to stop, I just want to keep going.

If you are learning the correct way to play; reading music, beats and rhythm, I would suggest you limit the formal stuff to about 30 minutes a day, not worrying about a missed day or week end. But do yourself a favor and try learning some tunes on your own; some honky tonk or classic rhythm or anything you like. Even learning to pick your favorite melody or song would be good. If you like the instrument you should be eager to get to it everyday. By the way, the constant playing will firm up those tender pinkies and in short order they won't hurt.

  4. The purpose of "practice" is to improve a skill or to learn something new. This demands concentration as well as a place (location) where there is no possibiliy of distraction.

If you are "practicing" then maybe no more than 30 min. a day

will be adecuate (every day). You will surprise yourself of how

much improvement you made in a month time.

Now - once you finish "a practice session" - THEN you can go

ahead and play all day if you want to. You are doing it for fun

and possible with other people around or with other distracting forces (TV - Radio) ? in the background.

I believe that if you can tell the difference between the two

"practice" vs. "fun-playing or goofing-off" you will reach your

goal of becoming a more complete and better player.

    Good Luck
