  1. yes, it is required. Each state may be different though. It is considered part of your vehicle emergency system

  2. Depending on where you are, it could be a part of the inspections and if it fails, you fail.

  3. Everywhere I've lived, the authorities require your parking brake work. The parking brake is similar to a bicycle cable brake. It's also referred to as AN EMERGENCY BRAKE!!!

It is intended as a manual backup system to the regular service brake, in case the service brake fails......how else would you stop if your brakes failed due to the brake line being cut by some debris on the road, or the failure of your master cylinder......so I would recommend that you......

    1.  Stop your car and while holding your right foot on the brake....

    2.  Put on your parking brake....

    3.  Shift to NEUTRAL, then release your foot from the service brake.....let your car "settle".....

    4.  Shift to PARK with your foot on the service brake.

Now you are safely and securely parked and your car won't roll away, and you are ensuring the longevity of your transmission......

So, in short, YES........for your own safety........

It's simply a cable attached to the rear brakes. You should know how to work this brake. Most people who drive a manual shift vehicle use it, but those with automatic transmissions often don't use their "parking brake".......and not using your parking brake, especially on an incline, will eventually cause your transmission to have problems due to the weight of the car against the Park gear........

  4. Yes.   Service brakes are for when you are driving,   parking brake is intended to make sure your car stays put when you  aren't there.    It can be used as a back-up in the event of service brake failure.     Keep it working.

  5. Yes.......

All vehicles must be equipped with some means of slowing down or stopping the car by use of a handbrake or foot brake.

  6. Yes you can get ticketed and you may crash because of brake failur
