Is it required to include medical income assistance in a FASFA form?

For the pass few years, my father has been suffering from a stroke. It's been hard, but the government does offer us an amount of money to cover for my father's illness. I am almost sure this money is considered a source of income. However, my mother has a low income too, and with the both of my mother and father, we have a reasonable average income. I tried filling out fafsa before, and they said i was not eligible. If i fill out the fafsa and do not include my father's medical incomes.. is it possible I can get away with it and earn some money for my tuition? Please give me any helpful (accurate) information.

  1. You need to find out from your parents EXACTLY what this "medical income" is because I have never heard of such a thing.  Find out the official name of the assistance and look for it on the fafsa form.

Also be aware you can report to the schools financial aid office instances in which you have very high unusual expenses (such as medical expenses).

  2. What is "medical income?"

If he receives disability, you must report that.  If he receives Social Security, SSI you have to report that.

If he is receiving medicaid, that does not have to be reported.

Also, talk to your financial aid office about a special circumstance, so they can reevaluate your families financial situation based on current figures.

  3. All forms of income must be reported on the FAFSA.  Is this money they received taxed when they file their tax return through the IRS?  If it is non-taxable they can include the annual amount of money they receive under worksheet B of the FAFSA for unataxed income or money received but not reported elsewhere.
