Is it required to insulate an addition?

I purchased a house in Louisiana, and the builder I purchased it from converted a carport into a 3rd bedroom. They did not insulate the ceiling on the converted room, just put another layer of plywood on top. What are the rules for contractors? Is it code to put insulation in any room that they build or convert? Should he be reported for not doing it to code, if that is in fact the way required by code? What could I do if I have already purcahsed the house?

  1. Just buy some insulation and do it..........everybody will be happy and no one has to pay much............somebody either forgot or was trying to cut corners............easiest is for you to go to lowes and buy some and put it in........Sorry, but thats the easy way............save the headaches

  2. Its code and if they got a building permit then the inspectors should have/would have caught it.  If they didn't get a permit, then they did what ever they pleased.  So insulate it yourself.  I think you can get a break from the feds on your income tax, I know you could in 07.  If you report this, who would you report it to, and who would eventually care.  The big questions as far as I would be concerned is did they insulate the side walls.  The ceiling is easy to take care and not expensive but what about the side walls?

  3. Call your county or parish building inspector.

Ask them the same question as if you were planning to build.

That area above your third room needs to be ventilated with side vents and roof vents also.

Then when the insullation is in place the room will stay warner in winter and cooler in summer, and your attic will not over heat either

  4. Check the building code in your area.
