when i think about how we're just...floating. (i know we have orbits and gravity hold us..but still.) there are so many galaxies above and below us and it really freaks me out how limitless space is. i like having control of things. its really a problem for me whenever i think of it because i break into a sweat and freak out. how do i stop doing this?

it was hard for me to write this by the way. i had to take a break midway because i freaked myself out.

  1. No it's not ridiculous for you to be "freaked" out about these things, you are what you are!  But there are places where you can get help with such things.  Dr's and nurses are always available for people who need help with phobia's and the like.  Did you know this?

Yep, cause I helped my brother get help this way---we went to our nearest medical support center and asked where to go for "x" problem.  They told us and we went!  It's as easy as that, and he got the help he needed, at the time!  So there it is, in a "nutshell"!

By the way "space" is limited, that is to say our solar system, not the universe!  We have found that by one of the "Voyager" spacecraft achieving the velocity or the "end" of what we believe the limit of our solar system to be!  Even though the "Voyager" is still "going", the "limit" will be reached and it's called "the heliopause".

  2. No, it isn't ridiculous.

Personally I think space is fascinating and I love to look at the pictures from the Hubble telescope.

But we're all different.  I get freaked out by bugs that can't even harm me.  Go figure.

  3. It can freak you out. I heard of one Rusian cosmonaut who got such a feeling while in space, which I imagine is much worse than getting it on the ground!

  4. No, it's not weird. It's just a phobia, and almost everyone has one. Yours just happens to be astrophobia.

A phobia is an unexplained fear of anything. It can be irrational or rational. I for instance, am scared of plants with very large leaves, large cacti, and mushrooms. There's no reason, they just give me the creeps!

  5. Think about the Earth itself.

It has been here, pretty much like it is today, for over 4 billion years.

And its going to be here, pretty much like it is today, for another 2 billion years.

And the sun is an average star, over 4 billion years old, with another 6 billion years to go.

That means that we are on a very stable, smoothly-moving planet around a very stable, gently shining star.

I can almost hear the Earth and the sun hum like a simple, well-oiled engine just purring along.

The rest of it - the galaxies, outer space, all that - are simply just really beautiful pictures.

Like fantastic artwork by very gifted painters.

If you look at some of the Hubble images, you can appreciate how beautiful and serene it all is.

  6. I get the same sensations sometimes.  It's a little weird but not ridiculous.  The truth *is* kind of freaky when you think about it, but also beautiful.

  7. There are many ways people "freak" themselves out about stuff. Flying, sailing, driving - driving over a bridge, etc...

We get the idea we have control because things usually go about as we expect. In reality you have no control of almost anything in your life. You breathe oxygen. The very presence of the oxygen you breathe is out of your control. The food that grows is out of your control. The heat that keeps the planet warm is out of your control.

Be happy that a volcano didn't sprout up in your back yard overnight.

Be happy that you haven't been struck by a meteorite.

Be happy that the coming ice age hasn't arrived - yet.

How about this - enjoy each day as a gift. Try, each day, to make the world a better place. Live madly, Love deeply. Be careful - don't get too big of a head - because you aren't that special, but, remember, too, YOU are very special - you are unique and precious. You are one of a kind.

And if a giant meteor is due to wipe out all life on Earth be sure that just before it arrives you remember to take out the trash.

  8. Well, I will not ridicule you.  I understand what you're talking about.  I get that impression when I see a photograph of a distant galaxy and one of the stars in our own galaxy is in the same field.  It's just out there -- in the middle of nowhere.  Nothing in front of it or behind it.  Nothing above or below, or to the sides.  Just suspended there in the middle of nothingness.  (Even "suspended" is not the right word, here.  Neither is floating or drifting.  It's just ... THERE.)

Oh yes, I know exactly what you're talking about, only it doesn't freak me out.  I am in awe of the perception.  I think you should consider yourself fortunate to have been able to sense this.  We are so used to things being on something else or connected to it in some way.  That's the way things are on earth.  But in space, it's different.  And to make matters even more mind-boggling, (sorry), there is no up or down, front or back, or left or right out there.  The star can be equally viewed from any angle or direction and it will appear equally isolated and unconnected to anything.   We're used to gravity pulling everything "down."  The earth and all those stars are in a state of , well, free-fall, but not getting any closer to the source of the gravity because they are orbiting.

Yes, it is hard to describe.

  9. Thales from Miletos once walking in his garden and watcing the starry night sky felt down making his servant laugh.Does this help?

  10. no.... but maybe for the wrong reasons tho....

if i were afraid to die (i've learned to accept death will happen and there's little i can do to circumvent that) it would terrify me... being somewhat of an astronomy buff, i know the universe has no shortage of ways to kill us.... and the worst part is, that for the most part, you get no warning of space-born killers.... sure most can be seen, the problem is that most AREN'T.... there simply too many places to look to really and effectively have any set warning system constantly watching for dangers....

some people are afraid of boats or swimming open water because there's alot underneath them that they can't see.... same principle. (to your case, not why i said i would be scared)

  11. The one thing about space is that it's very stable.... and, catastophic events happen rarely.  Eventually, your mind will embrace the fact that there's nothing you can do about the amazing things going on in space, and you can sit back & enjoy the show.

Worry about the things you *can* change - starting with a great education. Never be afraid to learn more, and don't shy from the harder things in life - conquering something difficult is the best feeling in the world.

  12. well, your right, but there are so many other things closer to us that can harm us even more... like criminals and accidents diseases,. so space is relatively peaceful and predictible and stable compared to other dangers on earth
