  1. The word "disgusting" is, if anything an understatement. Listen to the charity (i.e. lack of it) in the answers! Here we are referring to the most blatant and cruel act of State sectarianism and most people just accept it. We have equality laws for sexual orientation, age, gender, but the fact that over 5 million Roman Catholics, in total isolation are singled out for discrimination seems to bother no-one. Almost makes me ashamed of being British.

  2. Of course members of our beloved royal family cannot marry catholics.

    Whatever next!

Catholics are the scum of the earth. Their crimes over the centures are legion and they make the German n**i Party of the 1930s-40s seem like boy scouts.

Even now they allow millions in Africa to die from Aids and starvation through their refusal to allow contraception. And their policy of allowing pervert priests to continue in office is beyond reproach.

Of course catholics should never be allowed into positions of influence and power.

Even the Spanish government is now trying to remove catholics from having any influence in this once 'great' catholic nation:

  3. i assume we're talking about Peter Phillips wedding yesterday? what i find more strange about this is that he's worried about losing his place in the order of succession because of marriage to a catholic - what does it mean to be 11th in line to the throne? - nothing

  4. There is no law saying he can't marry a catholic he has to give up his right to the throne and perhaps the gravy train if he does that's all.

  5. It's about politics. Since the monarch is also head of the Anglican church, you can't have a Catholic get there.

  6. The law dates back to the 18th Century when religion was a major issue. The difficulty with changing the law is that not only does it have to be passed by the British Parliament but also by the Parliaments of all the other countries where the Queen is Head of State (including Canada, Australia and New Zealand).

If it was tested in court it would probably be overturned but nobody within the immediate Royal family (Charles and his sons)  has even suggested marrying a Catholic - Both Kate Middleton and Chelsy Davy are not Roman Catholics.

  7. Seems to me that anyone who is 11th in line of anything, would need to have malicious designs on foot, ...bonking off 10 "nuisances" is serious business. and needs serious intelligence of the conspiritorial intent of the apostate bride.

  8. Let's be honest here. If a royal really wanted to marry a catholic then that law would be relaxed. It is only still in place because it hasn't been an issue yet. I think calling it disgusting is overly dramatic.

  9. No - its the law.

  10. because its tradition

and they CAN marry catholics..they just have to give up the throne/title..theres a difference

  11. They CAN marry a Catholic if they are willing to give up their succession right, it is sad though.

  12. It is discrimination.  I don't think people should fear a Catholic monarch.

  13. This is a protestant country.  The law states that anyone who would be king (monarch) must be a protestant.  Yes, I'm aware that certain 'catholic' elements within the House of Commons seek to change the laws of England to enable one of their catholic quizzlings to become monarch.

Between the Monarch and Parliament stand the massed ranks of the Protestant People of England and Wales and we're not having it.

Take my word on it.  You can only push the people so far.

    POWER TO THE PEOPLE

  14. i think men and women should be free to marry whom they chose regardless of religion minoroty or stature

  15. Not really clued up on the whole "Protestant" thing, are you...

  16. they cant get engaged to arabs too. Tends to end in a messy car crash.

  17. It compromises the whole monarch been the head of the church of England thing if it were allowed. Yet the thing was introduced in times of real tension between protestants and catholics which is not present these days. Peter Phillips could have renounced his claim to the throne and left her to keep her catholic faith but they made the choice.

Bodywatch - in these uncertain days of muslim terrorism anything could happen - there is still possibility of him been king

  18. According to Sky News last night, British people used to be so scared of Catholics that a law was passed that members of the Royal family could not marry Catholics.  Apparently, although it dates back to the 18th Century, it is still in force because Parliament are too busy with "other matters" to take the time to go back over all these old laws.

Peter Phillips bride had to denounce her Catholic faith before she was permitted to marry him yesterday.

  19. Well, at least she can use contraception now.

I wonder what would happen if a royal asked to marry an atheist?  Would the same thing happen?  Does anyone have any ideas?

  20. It's WRONG to place restrictions on anyone as to who they can or can't marry in this day and age.

  21. No!

Nobody should be allowed to marry anybody else!

    Marriage is for the birds.

  22. I think it's ludicrous!

  23. It`s usually the other way about.  The non R.C. has to get married in the R.C. church and it is assumed that their offspring will be brought up R.C.  So what kind of `choice` is that?

  24. Not great on history of the royals, but think you will find that henry wanted to divorce his first wife, which is not acceptable in the catholic faith, pope would not allow it, bingo! protestant religion was born in England!!. It may have something to do with not allowing catholic spouses. Prince Charlie once  caused a stir by saying that when he becomes king (and head of the church of England) he will be king to/of all faiths...got skinned for that bloomer me thinks!.

Actually a "minor royal", 11th in line, as just got married, his bride denounced/changed her religion from Catholic so his place in line would not be lost!. One wonders what the circumstances would be for him to jump the queue!?!...

  25. True and correct!  (not if they wish to keep their right to the throne)
