Or was the chancellor more interested in grabbing more money from over-stretched adults?

  1. Don't be silly, if he put up the price off Alcopops the kid's couldn't afford them, after all underage drinking is at an all time high. Think of all the revenue the Government would lose.

  2. Any shop keeper found selling booze to underage kids , more than 3 times, gets his business closed down.

They can tax it or not, it is ILLEGAL to sell booze to children.

Also, if they do put tax on this product, children will just shift their focus elsewhere and switch to something they can afford. Cheap and nasty cider or Lambrini 16 ltrs for a £1 ...

Its irrelevant to tax this product. The criminal is the shop keeper.

  3. the govt has very large debts.  the govt also receives lots of money from the sale of alcohol and petrol.  deep down it has no real desire to curb the consumption of either

  4. Nasty cheap cider should be taxed heavily like the conservatives proposed as only yobs and down and outs drink the stuff

Another glass of white lightening darling?

  5. I agree to some extent, although tbh underage drinkers don't especially go for alcopops.  They go for whatever they can afford.  Mainly things like White Lightning, Lambrini etc.

Alcopops are more popular with young women drinkers than underage kids trying to get trollied in the supermarker car park.

  6. It won't make much difference, will it, really - it's still cheaper to buy a bottle of vodka than 1/2 dozen alcopops even with the increase.

You'll find that underage kids rarely BUY alcohol - they usually take it from their houses as it's easier to hide one bottle than several smaller ones

  7. bloody brilliant question Afro, excellant point!

  8. We all had a dabble in our teens I'm sure, but I wouldn't have dared go home p1ssed out of my head after 12 cans ........... where do their parents think they are, if they aren't going home. When I stayed over at a mates, my Mam would always ring the friends parents to make sure that's where I was actually staying.

I don't think the higher taxes will stop them drinking, the parents should !!

  9. That is the idea to try and stop youngsters from binge drinking.

  10. I think he has put tax on Alcopops along with other wines & spirits - first time there's been an increase in 10 years.  Yes, its just another way of raising taxes, the country's finances are in a mess.

  11. Good question it is what they drink all the cheaper stuff cider is cheap too and they should concentrate more on age limit higher and stop having a go at us adults while he was at it.

Carrier bags??? ok an envioronment issue but tax them our food will go up in the markets to pay for it. I know many big shops have freebag for life days it is the customer who prefers the plastic ones.

  12. Alcopops should have tax on i agree 110%.

Some places have banned alcopops (sweden) because of the young drinking culture. Abit to far i think cos they will drink anything. cider in my day! yuk.

  13. No, they drink vodka and big cheap bottles of cider.

He can't put tax on alcopops directly, only on the spirit.

Anyway, alcopops aren't very strong.  I can get through 8 or 9 before feeling even a little bit tipsy.

  14. Of course it's got nothing to do with putting a stop to underage binge drinkers, it's all about raising more tax revenue. Remember that poor old England is drowning from the weight of all the bloody subsidies we hand out to everybody else, Scotland, Wales and virtually the whole of the flippin United States of Europe.....

  15. If the kids want to buy Alcopops, they'll buy them whether or not there's a tax (though I think there is one now). The government isn't going to change anything unless they take actual, decisive action rather than sitting on their lazy asses and mouthing off about how great they are and how rubbish this new generation is turning out to be.

  16. Underage drinkers will drink anything they can get their hands on, it's not just alcopops

A tax on it won't make a difference

  17. he should have put a lot more tax on alco pops..kids should not be drinking..what kind of society are we..

  18. They'd only move onto cheaper stuff but yeah I agree it's wrong but for him it's right cos he....geeesh I'm confused !!LOL!

  19. Good question afro.....do they not fall under Wines & Spirits though ??  And if not why not ??
