  1. The concept of "species" is a human concoction.  Nature does not care if any "species" survives or not.  Billions have come and gone.  It is all part of the process of Natural Selection.

Man is also part of this process.  If other species cannot adapt it is Nature's Way then they go extinct and allow other species to evolve to fill that space.

I really don't know why people seem to think extinction is somehow a crime or worse a sin.  If it were not for other species going extinct there would not be man today.  Man is Nature's greatest accomplishment.  He is a creature who no longer needs to evolve to survive because he can modify his environment to suit him.  That is obviously the ultimate goal of Natural Selection; a guaranteed survivor.

  2. The mountain lion has been a victim of fear and ignorance in many areas.  When the animal was hunted into submission near Lyme, Connecticut, the deer population soared, as did the tick population.  Hence the "discovery" and naming of Lyme Disease after that community.  The absence of the mountain lion in many areas leads to mesopredator release, a phenomenon which can actually impact the population of nesting songbirds.

There are a number of rudimentary precautions one can take to protect your family and pets against mountain lions in any given area.  It's really just a matter of common sense.

But to answer your question, there are state listings and there are federal listings.  A federal listing would protect a species.  A state listing would not, unless that species were also listed in adjoining states.

  3. Hunting in the United States is greatly regulated and monitored by our many conservation departments in the states. No aminal is hunted beyond the means to which the animal can sustain the thinning of its kind.

Many animals are hunted because of their population is a threat to either, themselves, other animal populations of humans.

Hunting licenses are issued for most species based on calculated birth rates of the previous year. If there is no limit or if there is a "shot on sight without a license" policy it is because the population can support the numbers that might be eliminated.

  4. The Florida panther is native to Florida...Nowhere else.

Panthers in other locations are a different species.

Florida panthers are smaller and can swim.  Other cats don't.

  5. In Oregon they are called cougars and you do have the right to kill these animals if you or someone life`s is in danger. Even if your pet are in danger it`s O.K. and yes they are on the endangered list here too.

  6. Not sure why you want to keep something around that eats people and pets.

Simple idea,  do not try to get the government to force a predator into someone else's yard when you would not want it in yours.

  7. If it's the same animal but located in a different part of the country and there is no legislation protecting it, then you are allowed to hunt it, so you shouldn't feel bad because if it was threatened there would be regulations, which there could be on how many you can kill a season etc. which you might want to check out before you hunt, there can be serious fines and punishments for violating the regulations set on hunting.

  8. It is not right to kill. It is a crime.

  9. For the same reason we can cage Apes and not humans. (Not normally anyway). Panthers and mountain lions evolved differently in different locations. Since there are less panthers and more mountain lions, people feel we need to preserve one species and control the population of the other.
