Question:

Is it risky to name your kid something really out there?

It might be more risky, since they might not like it. Or at least there's a higher probability that more people who hear it won't like it.

I'm starting to consider that when choosing names. For example, my favorites used to be Adelaide, Greta, and Lucy. Granted, none of these are WAY out there, but I think I might go for Lucy just for the sake of not over-risking it.

What do you think?

  1. I agree with christina...

unique names can be nice as long as it isnt an object or a joke (like talulah does the hula, or hunter green) ....and names that sound like a dropped game of scrabble arent the best either...like quandante, or ashkayalee.....

I like lucy, its nice and its not really unusual or overused ...personally im not wild about greta... and im not sure how you pronounce adelaide Unique names can be a good thing cuz there are way too many katies and brittanys in the world

  2. I think unique names are nice as long as you don't go naming your kid God'iss Love or Pilot Inspektor! Just thing about having the name you want to give your baby. Would you hate being called that?

  3. My daughters called Oceanella which has had good and bad feedback. She'll get bullied they say.,she'll find it difficult to get a job!! Well I've known people with unique names that haven't had any problems in life. Were very popular in school have jobs etc. Lead normal lives just like those with popular names.

  4. I would say go for it. As for finding names on key chains and such, you can always customize certain items.

  5. Those names are perfectly fine. They are very pretty. I say go for it. My favorite is Adelaide or Greta.

  6. Oprah has a very unique name and obviously she's done just fine with it. Can you see Oprah with a "normal" name like Susan? To me, it's the person who carries the name that makes it powerful. Any of your choices would work nicely. My favorite is Greta, I know most will say Lucy(which is a fine name), but I love the sound of Greta and it's beautiful and unique not crazy and unique lol. Best of luck!

  7. names that are hard to pronounce or open to pronunciation and spelling are not a good idea. if you have an unusual name that is very plainly pronounceable and spells exactly like it sounds, it is okay. I love the name Lucy - it is adorable. also like Adelaide.

  8. I think people with "way out there" have a disadvantage in some aspects.  A lot of people, i've noticed, are naming their babies. And they seem to be stuck in the mentality that they are only naming this little person with no voice or opinion.  What happens when the child gets older?? You have to consider the playground torment, the embarrassment of teachers mispronouncing it, everyone and their brother misspelling it. All because you wanted to be creative.

When choosing a name, i've been trying to think of the women my daughter will become - will she be taken seriously at job interviews? When shes on the phone trying to set up her cable - how many times is she gonna have to spell her name for the operator? When at a cocktail party at her new law firm, getting introduced to the senior partner... how many times will she have to repeat herself so this deaf, old, drunk man gets it right?

In this day in age, my daughter will be unique - not just in the fact that her personality will make her that way... but because her name isn't difficult or obscure.

  9. you should find a website with meanings behind the namez their pretty cool exspecially when your child nos his name was.....picked with a meaning... like i no its a girl but caleb means bold hahah my names angela it means mailo man haha my mom didnt care about the meaning of the name haha

  10. Just don't do Apple... that's dumb. I wouldn't do Greta, because no one nice has that name. I don't think an "out there" name is bad, mine's Amelia and apperently that's "out there" and i like my name. A common name like Jen or Mike, because it will cause problems if there are mulitple in one class, you know?

  11. As long as it is not a play on words or something vulgar... i dont think so. i was reading an article the other day about kids with odd names. one of them was harry d**k. another  was fun pants. now THAT is a risky and cruel name to name a child. my childrens names are different.. but most people admire their uniqueness. i have two boys and one girl. The boys are named Sylvester and Neptune. My daughter is January.

so i dont think your names are too risky.

  12. Greta and Lucy is a nice name.

I know a girl named Greta and a few girls with the name Lucy.

  13. Lucy isn't really out there to me.  It's just a shorter version of Lucille, but Lucy sounds cute when they are little and not too strange as an adult.

Adelaide is unusual in the sense you don't hear it alot, but it's nice. I kind of like it, but better I like Adeline.

Greta, I'm sorry, I just don't like it at all. It makes me think of someone very stern, at least to me.

I don't think these are "out there" at all. Out there to me would be weird stuff like "Banana" or some other fruit or something like "Knoxville" or "Blue" or "Piglet" etc... I'm being ridiculous of course, but there are people that use much odder names for their kids, like Talulah Does the Hula in Hawaii-  UGH!

  14. Trust me unique names are the best! so much better then common names. My name is Kyla. Very rarely have i found anybody with that name. At first it annoyed me cause i could never find anything with my name on it but now i don't mind cause i realize how unique it is! so if i were u i would definitely go with a unique and different name. =)
