Question:

Is it rude to ask someone to change seats on a greyhound so you can sit with your friend?

This has happened to me often, since I usually travel alone.

I usually arrive way early to get a good seat and pick a window seat to minimize motion sickness.

When someone comes up to me at the end of boarding and asks me to change seats so they can sit with their friend I get ticked off. I usually just nicely explain to them that I get really sick if I'm not next to a window, but sometimes they insist anyway!

Is it just me or is that kinda rude???

  1. If they insist that you switch seats even after you explain to them about the motion sickness, then yes, that is definitely rude. I would be mad if someone did that to me. But if they politely ask if you wouldn't mind changing seats and then leave you alone after you say no, then that's not rude.

    Hope that helps :)

  2. It's perfectly polite to ask someone to change seats so that they can sit with their traveling companion.  It's the norm on airplanes.  I generally think it's rude to say no, but I think it's also perfectly polite to tell them you have to have a window seat or you get motion sickness, and to not move.

  3. As long as you politely decline, there is no reason for you to have to explain yourself.

  4. It's not rude to ask once.

It's rude to insist after the first refusal.

Just explain to them that you get motion sickness which can be reduced by choosing a window seat. If the seat they currently have is also a window seat, then changing shouldn't really affect your journey much at all.

  5. Its not rude the first time, if they keep on asking tell them to go away, you can't always let people take advantage of you, tell them that you have a problem, if they don't listen then just ignore them.

  6. I would say insisting is rude, but at the same time if I was wanting to sit with my friend, I would need a pretty good reason from you as to why you won't give up your seat.  I mean honestly, motion sickness?  I'd just roll my eyes and deal with it anyways, but if your alone why does it matter?  Half the seats are window and half the seats are aisle, and the majority of people don't care which they sit in.  If somebody asked me I would definitely switch seats, because obviously it's more important to them than it is to me.  Nowadays though I definitely wouldn't want to do anything to p**s anybody off on a Greyhound bus, after that guy in Canada literally butchered the guy sitting next to him to death, decapitated him and waved the head and horrified passengers.

  7. its not rude the 1st, but if they keep bugging then yes

  8. It depends.  Since you are alone & early, you have total right to pick your seat - first come first serve thing.  Putting myself on their shoes, however, I understand cause I'd love to seat with whoever I'm with.  So, best thing is to tell them:

"I came early to seat next to the window so I won't get motion sickness!  That way maybe they will come earlier too, instead of bagging other people to move.

p.s. if the elderly, the handicap, or a mother with a baby/kid ask me, I would :)

  9. They are out of line, picking on a single passenger, so that they can bully you. You could say, "Tough noogies honey", however, you have to go to the bathroom sometime. I'm sorry for you. Have a good day.
